The role of educational media in changing learning environments

    21st June 2023, 09:00 - 10:30

Higher Education institutions are subject to an ever-increasing level of pressure to innovate to ensure their continued relevance in contemporary society. This points to a re-appraisal of the tools and structures supporting innovation including the production and use of educational media and where this fits within the wider move towards more technological support including AI. Invited speakers in this session will share their thoughts on this topic and provide guidance on directions for the future.

UbiCast – Empowering teachers to create their own educational videos

    21st June 2023, 11:00 - 11:30

Designing effective and engaging learning experiences is one of the teachers’ greatest challenges today. As online learning continues to grow in popularity, teachers need to be empowered to start creating their own educational videos. Why you may ask? Because delivering video lessons can be an effective and efficient way for teachers to engage students, save time, and improve learning outcomes.

But the real question is: how can we empower teachers to create their own video content?

In this workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the benefits of producing educational videos and how to use the Nudgis platform to create engaging videos effectively. In the second part, we will showcase the best practices implemented by the Haute École HELMo for empowering teachers. This will include an overview of HELMo’s e-learning think tank created to support and train their own teachers and improve their pedagogical practices.

Session leaders: Jenny Méité, International Business Developer, UbiCast & Izida Khamidoullina , Head of
the E-learning Department, Haute École Libre Mosane, Belgium

Rapidmooc’s easy-to-use low-tech solution supports academic teaching with video

    21st June 2023, 11:35 - 12:05

The use of video in education has become more important in the last few years. Not only in online education, but also in campus orientated courses. Blended course design and flipping the classroom methodologies has led teachers to explore teaching with video. Tech savvy teaching staff were working with their familiar tools such as OBS or Adobe Premiere, while others were struggling with their webcams and a recorded MS Teams meeting. At Howest we wanted to facilitate these teaching staff with an easy-to-use low-tech solution to record a professional video. Rapidmooc came up with that solution.

Session leaders: Tim Vanderhaeghen, Project lead EdTech & Digital Learning, Howest, University of Applied Sciences in Flanders, Belgium & Olivier Armitano-Grivel, Rapidmooc

    21st June 2023, 11:00 - 12:30

Working with scientists in making video content is fun but can be quite a challenge. Often, scientists are not used to the media production workflow and feel insecure. Sometimes they are even stubborn. Converting their elaborate knowledge into a short video isn’t easy. Scientific facts alone are not enough to persuade the general public and presenting in front of a camera is quite different from writing papers.

In this session we’ll dive into the character and position of the scientist and AV professional. Our focus will be more on the soft skills than the technical aspects of production. We’ll look at the different roles and responsibilities during the production and give you examples on how to let ‘your’ scientist shine on screen, plus stay happy yourself. Of course, we are also curious to hear about your own experiences and look forward to your feedback.
